5G technology allows the remote operation of machinery, increase industrial productivity, and reduce latency issues – thus working in real time ACCIONA has worked with Orange and Mobile World Capital Barcelona in the initiative 5G Barcelona
General Manager of Technology and Innovation at ACCIONA, Arantza Ezpeleta, has presented in the MWC19 its pilot program Collaborative and autonomous robots under the initiative 5G Barcelona. Thanks to 5G technology, a worker can control a robot vehicle in a remote fashion, thus solving the high fading rates and risk of signal loss that you get with other data transmission technologies such as Wi-Fi, LTEM or NBIoT.
Among other things, 5G technology allows faster execution times (eliminating latency issues), data exchange between robots (i.e. Environment metrics) so that these can collaborate on tasks in an autonomous way. 5G has clear applications within Industry 4.0, whereby labor risk and installation costs will be reduced, and the centralization of operations and disposition of professionals that are highly qualified and do not have to travel, providing a service to several projects remotely.
The demo, which can be found at ACCIONA’s stand in MWC19, allows for the passersby to operate remotely the robot vehicle, which is in a logistics warehouse in Barcelona’s industrial area. In the pilot launched by ACCIONA, Orange and 5G Barcelona, an autonomous robot platform MIR200 has been equipped with a 2D and 360 cameras system that allows the platform to be remotely controlled thanks to 5G communication technology, as this makes the 2D and 360 video feeds to be retransmitted with low latency.
